A Little Too Much Thinking

Right so I seem to be an insanely curious person. Seriously, I could think up about a zillion questions, if that's even a number, (is that a number?) in a day. It gets irritating quite frankly, although I do love it. I think my dad and bf would disagree though. I don't think it would be much fun trying to answer questions that probably don't have an answer. Thank the Lord for Google! Actually come to think of it, that must be the reason why it took my SO long to come up with my dissertation hypothesis. I would like to add, I think I FINALLY found it earlier. Well not really found, it wasn't hiding under a rock or anything, figured I should say. Hoorahh for me :).
Anyway, back to the point. I was lying in bed last night, reading my book, 'I heart New York,' (cheesy I know) and she (the main character Angela) had recently bought a new Marc Jacobs bag. Fabulous. (By the way I wanted a light read to save me from the never-ending academic blurb I have been reading for my research.)
So I was thinking about this statement, investment piece. Supposedly something all fashionistas have? Which I do myself I have to admit, my D&G sunglasses, which got scratched by the frumpy security man at Gatwick airport I want to add. Clearly they have no idea how much these things are worth to a student like me. Almost ruined my holiday...
Back to the point; I thought the idea with fashion is, apart from self-expression, individuality, style etc Blahh, was that trends are constantly changing & people are rapidly following. So with these 'investment' buys, really it's just a way of saying, I'm not buying a new version of this even when the trends change.
Why though? This is what I don't understand.
Investment pieces have been around for centuries, but don't you think times would have changed slightly? I know we are in recession, but we don't still live off rations!
I'm not saying buy something, wear it once and throw it away. Nor am I saying we should change the way we 'invest' in something. I was merely just pondering. It just struck me as a bit ironic really.
Saying that I do like a good investment buy. In other words, justifying buying something expensive and fabulous. Something I do a lot - minus the expensive. But justifying, YES I do that alot!
I just wanted to write these thoughts down really. And probably the answer is, some things will never go out of fashion.
